NEW DELHI, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) — Rahul Gandhi on Monday filed his nomination to take over the reins of India’s main opposition Congress party from mother Sonia Gandhi.
Monday is the last day for anyone in the party to file nomination papers to challenge Gandhi, who has been Congress vice president for five years, to an election for the top slot. And if no one else files the nomination for the Congress president’s post, then 47-year-old Rahul Gandhi could be declared the party chief by the end of the day, unopposed.
Sonia Gandhi, who has been at the helm of the Congress since 1998, is of late not keeping well and so she wants to hand over the party’s reins only to her son. Moreover, there has been a growing clamor among the young leaders of the Congress for Rahul Gandhi to take over to give a fresh impetus to the decades-old party.
“It is a good sign for the party and I’m sure he’ll do extremely well,” Captain Amarinder Singh, Congress chief minister of northern Indian state of Punjab, told the media in Delhi. The general elections are due in 2019 and Gandhi’s elevation to the post of the Congress chief will be a clever move to woo youth voters of this country.Enditem
