November 22 (NepalNiti): Just days after US used it’s veto power in UN security council to block the resolution calling for Donald Trump to rescind his declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, UN General Assembly condemned America’s unilateral action on Thursday. The General Assembly voted by 128-8, delivering a humiliating blow in the world stage.
Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas’s spokesman Abu Rdainah decladed this as a “victory for Palestine”.
Thirty-five countries, primarily from Africa and Latin America abstained from the vote.
Britain, Russia and India all voted for the motion. Prior to the vote, US’s ambassador to UN, Nikki Haley warned the world stage that US would be “taking names” of countries who vote to condemn United State’s actions.
The Associated Press reported that US had written to most UN member states with warning of possible retaliations.
On Wednesday, following the Veto, Mr Trump had said, “For all these nations, they take our money and then vote against us. They take hundreds of millions of dollars, even billions of dollars and then they vote against us”.
Nepal was among the 128 nations in the General Assembly, who voted in favor of the resolution condemning US’s actions.
United States took to @USUN twitter account to state that despite the vote, “America will put our embassy in #Jerusalem… No vote in the UN will make any difference on that”
